Not Sharing Our Concerns

After a curious exchange of emails, Ms Basescu has finally denied us the interview. That is indeed pretty disappointing, as we counted on having a fair conversation with someone who shared the preoccupations of our generation.
by Arsène Lupin

Few key points for the readers:

a) We contacted the office of Ms Basescu on the 1st of March to organize an interview with her. That has already been done with other MEPs and worked out smoothly.
b) We were asked for more information. We provided the information in a subsequent email on the 6th of March: that email was not returned. We sent a reminder on the 13th: the reminder was not returned.
c) We then proceeded to publish an article on The Strasbourger on the 25th of March, 24 days after our first request and 19 days after the communication had ended with the office of Ms Basescu.
d) We finally received an answer by the office, claiming that we had tried to contact them (!) via phone. I can't remember anyone from our team doing this, but maybe I am wrong. In the answer, we were also asked to correct the article.
e) We said there was no need to correct the article, unless Ms Basescu would have actually talked to us and refuted what was contained in the piece. We were asked to contact the press officer to get an interview space.
f) We waited until the press officer came back from holiday (about ten days from our request) and were told that no interview would take place.
Beneath, a report of the email exchange with the office of Ms Basescu:
The Strasbourger:
Dear Ms Basescu,
I am a Brussels based Italian who has founded, together with some colleagues and friends, an online platform for discussions around European politics: The Strasbourger (www.thestrasbourger.eu)
Our aim is to fire debates on European politics that bear no prejudice and show different views and for this reason we are interviewing MEPs from all areas of the political spectrum.
We have come across your name because we would like to have a view from an MEP who comes from a "new" Member State and because we want to challenge the idea that the EPP likes power play more than policymaking.
Would you be so kind to suggest a date where we can come and have a small chat?
You can find an example of a Strasbourger interview at this address: http://thestrasbourger.eu/article/Gianni%20Be%20Good/143
I am looking forward to meeting you and your team.
Basescu's office:
I have received your email and would like to know more details about it. Could you sned me some more information in this respect?
Best regards,
The Strasbourger:
We would like to ask Ms Basescu a few questions on Europe, the role of Romania in the European integration, her successful political career.
We are all young Europeans and we very much want to meet a young MEP that doesn't fear standing among established politicians.
The interview will last for about 15-20 minutes and it will be published on our platform. We generally record it, but it is up to you if this will be the case with Ms Basescu.
Br,
The Strasbourger:
Dear
I was wondering if you had any news about our interview.
I know this is Strasbourg week, but it would be nice to try to schedule a date before Easter.
We have already interviewed Vice President Karas last week, if you want to check the type of questions we asked him.
Please keep me posted and thank you in advance for your patience.
Best regards,
Basescu's office (after the article was published on 25th of March):
Dear ...
I am writing to you concerning the article about MEP Elena Basescu that was published on "The Strasbourger" yesterday. It was with surprise that we have discovered this article, and I am afraid it is based on a misunderstanding. It is true that you contacted us for an interview and that we asked for more details about it. But it is not true we did not give you any other answer after that: you (or one of your colleagues) contacted our office by phone during the last plenary session in Strasbourg, and I told you that Ms. Basescu had been informed about your request, but ot was very difficult to organise the interview during that week. So I asked you to re-contact us after the plenary in order to schedule a date. We did not receive any other news from you after that, while our understanding was that you were going to re-contact us.
We are very sorry about this very unpleasant situation, which is, as I said, seems to be the result of a misunderstanding. If there is anyone to blame, it is myself for not having understood you correctly. Under these circumstances, I think you agree with me that this cannot, in any way, be imputed to Ms. Basescu, while currently she is the only one affected by the your article and the conclusions it draws. I hope you can understand the situation and that we can count on your support in order to correct it, since the article generates an unfair and unjustified image.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
The Strasbourger:
Dear ...
Many thanks for your kind email.
I am very surprised by your explanation, as nobody from The Strasbourger ever received a call from your office.
I am also very sorry to hear that there has been a misunderstanding in your office.
Please feel free to give us a date for the interview.
I will be happy to correct the article.
Best regards,
Ms Basescu's office:
Dear
Ms. Basescu has a very busy schedule this week. We have tried to identify a free date and time when the interview could be realized, but I'm afraid that it is not going to be possible during the following days.
As you probably know, next week is a green week and the MEPs are not in Brussels.
In order to set a date for the interview after that, I will ask you to contact the press officer......
Best regards,
The Strasbourger
Dear (press officer)
I've been asked by your colleague ... to contact you.
I am writing to ask you if Ms Basescu could meet with The Strasbourger to answer a few questions on youth and the future of Europe.
Would you be so kind to let me know her availability?
I stay at your disposal for any question you may have.
Best regards,
Press Officer:
Dear
Thank you for your email.
I have noticed you have already published a piece on MEP Basescu. Thank
you for your interest in the EPP Group and its members.
I see no point in a follow up after reading your article.
You can follow our activity on www.eppgroup.eu as well as on the
official website of the European Parliament.
The EPP Group is present on Facebook and Twitter.
Kind regards,
If Ms Basescu's office did not want to give us the interview from the very beginning, it should have said that straight away.
If, on the contrary, her team decided to deny us the interview after we published the piece, then why did they ask us to talk to the press officer and why did they request that we changed the content of the article?
These questions will remain unanswered.
