Further to our debate last night I am writing to you to once again call on you to Repudiate the Deal and Stand on your own merits.
I am standing as a Candidate in the election for the Presidency of the European Parliament so that OUR Members might have a CHOICE. Defending our Right to Choose is a fundamental cornerstone of freedom.
I believe that an elected President legitimises the whole Parliament. An elected President of the European Parliament is a unique symbol of democratic Office amongst the other EU Institutions.
We cannot extend our influence and promote democracy, human rights, good governance, and transparency globally using our "soft power" without ever electing our own President in a transparent and open way. An unelected one, secured by a back room deal between 2 people for 754 MEPs makes us a laughing stock. I am sure you will agree that we must stop it as strong proponents of democracy.
I also believe that the President of the Parliament should be a proper Speaker - a neutral, non political, non-voting President. Only such a President or Speaker can represent us all – every individual MEP in large groups or small, new or veteran, male or female.
Furthermore, in a Consensual Parliament a politically neutral President is essential for building unity at a very difficult time for Europe. An adversarial President with fixed political views will cause disharmony and strife at this critical time. A politically neutral President can also progress reform, accountability, equality of treatment and opportunity for all our MEPS and protect the democratic rights of all our European citizens.
That is why I am now writing to kindly request you dear Mr Schulz to REPUDIATE any deals made and to stand for fair and free election on your own merits and programme, to state categorically that you will undertake to be totally neutral in the Chamber and outside, to not take part in any political activity inimical to any other Member, and to protect the rights of each and every Member without prejudice or favour during your term as President or Speaker, should you be elected.
Should you agree to this, I look forward to receiving a copy of letter from you addressed to Joseph Daul repudiating the deal.
Assuring you of my highest regards
