Frequently Asked Questions
What’s The Strasbourger?
The Strasbourger is a collaborative website on EU affairs.
Which means?
The Strasbourger publishes articles, videos, pictures that relate to various aspects of current events in the EU and within the single Member States. The articles that appear on the website are written by a number of inside or outside contributors, which makes the website a product of a combined effort.
Collaborative.. but who’s in charge? Is there a Mr. Strasbourger?
The founders are three citizens of Europe with different political background.
Why did you create The Strasbourger?
We feel that an open and possibly neutral debate on the future of the EU is badly needed, and with the world changing unexpectedly fast and threatening to transform our social and economic system, a return to public life is crucial. We do not want to accept all this passively. We feel it is time to go back to politics and challenge ourselves with the obligation to make proposals and think about a different Europe.
What’s with the name?
The name embodies both the idealism and everything that is wrong about Europe. It is a symbol of historical reconciliation and European integration. And yet, by always referring to this symbolic city which is no longer symbolic, Europe betrays its tendency to look backwards instead of forwards.
Are you backed by anyone or pursuing a hidden agenda?
There are no political parties, foundations, think tanks or anything of that sort influencing our work and there is no hidden agenda. The Strasbourger welcomes a debate open to all political views as long as it is brought forward in a civil, non-violent, form.
Are you trying to make money out of it?
The Strasbourger is not for profit. Any potential revenue will be reinvested in the upkeep of the website.
How can I send my articles?
You can contribute by registering through the appropriate tool that is highlighted on the home page. We welcome contributions from all different backgrounds, but we keep the faculty to refuse low quality writing and content that is inappropriate. We do however publish articles that come from the most diverse positions, regardless of their views on Europe.
Is this a publicity stunt for the European Union?
Definetely not: this is an open platform where debate is welcomed and fostered by different opinions. The Strasbourger is not a conformist, flat instrument to sing the praises of the European Union, but an arena to restart a political debate on Europe and to guarantee that people from our generation that want to discuss politics finally get their chance.
What exactly is the Schmeuze?
Schmeuze, in English Schmooze, is an old (most likely) yiddish word that describes to capacity to “to talk casually, especially in order to gain an advantage or make a social connection”. It is the duty of our “man behind the scenes”, Arsène Lupin, to catch the latest gossip and information that are not “entirely” public. His identity will, of course, remain secret, as he also works in Brussels and could easily be recognized.
